Synopsis
All That Heaven Allows (1955) is a Douglas Sirk melodrama you can watch online on iFILM. Cary Scott is a well-off widow in a small New England town, living inside a set of social rules she never agreed to. Ron Kirby — younger, a gardener, someone who reads Thoreau and cares nothing for status — is the wrong man by everyone else's measure.
When they fall for each other, the town makes its feelings known quickly: her adult children are appalled, her country club friends drift away, and the judgment comes wrapped in politeness that makes it harder to argue with. Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson play it quietly, letting the silences carry weight. Sirk shoots the whole thing in lush Technicolor and frames every scene with the precision of someone making a point — a television set delivered to Cary's living room as a consolation prize is probably the most damning image in 1950s Hollywood.
Fassbinder, Haynes and Almodóvar all name this film as an influence — not because of the romance, but because of what Sirk does with it. Stream All That Heaven Allows (1955) on iFILM.
