The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley
Visionary. Billionaire. Fraud?
Synopsis
The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019) is an American documentary you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Alex Gibney. It follows Elizabeth Holmes, who built Theranos on the promise of near-instant blood tests from a single drop — a technology that, if real, would have reshaped medical diagnostics. Investors valued the company at nine billion dollars. It wasn't real.
Gibney reconstructs the deception methodically: how Holmes cultivated her persona, how the company suppressed internal doubts for years, and how two whistleblowers — employee Erika Cheung and board member's grandson Tyler Shultz — eventually stepped forward at considerable personal cost. Venture capitalist Tim Draper, medical advisor Phyllis Gardner, and others who were close to the operation appear on camera. The film runs 119 minutes.
What makes this documentary sharper than a straightforward fraud exposé is Gibney's focus on the mechanism — how experienced, intelligent people convinced themselves not to look too closely. Stream The Inventor (2019) online on iFILM.
