Synopsis
Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973) is the show to watch online if you love classic Trek — a direct continuation of the original series in cartoon form, here on iFILM. It follows the final year of the Enterprise's five-year mission under Captain Kirk.
Most of the original cast came back to voice their roles: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, plus George Takei, Nichelle Nichols and James Doohan. Animation let Filmation do what 1960s live television couldn't afford — alien worlds, enormous creatures, real deep-space spectacle. Episodes run short, around half an hour, but several came straight from the original writers, David Gerrold among them.
In 1975 it earned the franchise its first Emmy. Fans argued for years over how canonical it really is, yet plenty of its ideas resurfaced later in the movies and spin-offs.
