Synopsis
Wild Rose (2019) is a British musical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Tom Harper and led by Jessie Buckley in a performance that pulls no punches. Rose-Lynn Harlan walks out of a Glasgow prison in cowboy boots, a rhinestone shirt, and an iron conviction: she belongs on a stage in Nashville, not on a council estate changing nappies.
Her mother Marion — Julie Walters at her most quietly devastating — has spent a year raising Rose-Lynn's two young children and is not interested in a fresh wave of chaos. A job cleaning houses is arranged. One of those houses belongs to Susannah, played by Sophie Okonedo, who hears Rose-Lynn sing and decides to help. What follows is not a smooth arc toward a dream. Rose-Lynn keeps making the selfish choice, then the slightly less selfish one, and the film watches without judging too hard.
Buckley sings every note live, and it shows — the musical numbers feel like pressure escaping rather than choreography. She landed a BAFTA nomination for the role, well-earned. Wild Rose is the kind of film that remembers ambition and responsibility are genuinely in conflict, not just temporarily — and it trusts the audience to sit with that.
