Synopsis
Tender Mercies (1983) is Bruce Beresford's quiet drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Mac Sledge once filled arenas as a country star. Now he's a broke, washed-up drunk who wakes on the floor of a roadside Texas motel with nowhere left to go.
The motel's owner, a young widow named Rosa Lee, lets him work off the room and asks no questions. She has a son, a church choir on Sundays, and a calm steadiness that slowly pulls Mac toward sobriety. There are no big speeches here. The film just watches a man relearn ordinary life — mending a fence, writing songs again, showing up for people who chose to trust him. Robert Duvall plays Mac barely above a whisper and sings the character's songs himself.
Horton Foote's spare screenplay does the heavy lifting, leaving more in the silences than in the lines. Duvall took home the Oscar for Best Actor, and Foote landed one for the script. If you're tired of dramas that beg for your tears, this one earns its feeling by holding back. Stream Tender Mercies (1983) online on iFILM.
