Synopsis
The Naked Jungle (1954) is an American adventure-melodrama you can watch online on iFILM. Byron Haskin directs, with Charlton Heston and Eleanor Parker in the leads. Set deep in the South American backcountry, it follows a stubborn cocoa planter used to bending the jungle to his will instead of the other way around.
Leiningen sends for a wife he has never met and marries her by mail. What he gets is an independent woman who refuses to be tamed, and their clash of wills carries the first half of the film. Then the marabunta arrives — a column of army ants two miles wide and twenty long, devouring everything in its path. Saving the plantation turns out to mean saving the marriage and swallowing some pride too.
The script grew out of Carl Stephenson's story "Leiningen Versus the Ants," and George Pal, the era's great fantasy producer, backed it. Solid old-school cinema where the exotic setting and the coming disaster grip as hard as the romance. A treat for fans of golden-age Hollywood adventure.
