Synopsis
An Inspector Calls (1954) is a British mystery you can watch online when you want a tight, talky thriller that turns the screw. A wealthy industrialist, Arthur Birling, is toasting his daughter's engagement over dinner. Smug speeches, good wine. Then the doorbell rings.
A police inspector named Poole steps in with grim news: a young working-class woman, Eva Smith, has just died. His questions land softly and cut deep. One by one, everyone at that table turns out to have crossed paths with the dead girl, and everyone has something to hide. The cosy drawing room becomes an interrogation cell, and nobody walks out of it clean.
Director Guy Hamilton adapts J.B. Priestley's celebrated stage play, still taught in British classrooms as a parable of class guilt and shared blame. Alastair Sim carries the whole thing without raising his voice — calm, courteous, impossible to shake off, which is exactly what makes him so unnerving. Eighty minutes of black-and-white pressure, and a final reveal that rearranges everything before it. Stream An Inspector Calls (1954) online on iFILM.
