Synopsis
The Glenn Miller Story (1954) is a music-driven biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. James Stewart plays the trombonist who spent years chasing a sound he could hear in his head but couldn't quite write down, with June Allyson as Helen, the woman who backed him before anyone else did.
Anthony Mann follows Miller from pawned instruments and rented rooms to packed ballrooms and his own orchestra. The whole story turns on one stubborn instinct: float a clarinet above the saxophones and you get that warm, instantly recognizable swing. Along the way you hear "Moonlight Serenade" and "In the Mood," and real jazz greats step into frame, including Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa and vocal group The Modernaires.
The ending pulls no punches: the band plays for troops overseas, and Miller vanishes over the English Channel in the winter of 1944. Stewart is quiet and likable, the music is alive, and the era's swing sounds freshly cut. A solid pick for fans of classic Hollywood and big-band jazz.
