Invaders from Mars

Invaders from Mars (1953) is a sci-fi horror from director William Cameron Menzies — watch it online on iFILM. Young David wakes up in the middle of the night just in time to see a flying saucer drop behind the hill at the edge of town. His father goes out to investigate. He comes back wrong.

The change is subtle at first — too quiet, too cold, a strange mark on the back of his neck. Then the neighbors start acting the same way, and the local police, and soon David is a child screaming a warning that no adult wants to hear. Only astronomer Dr. Blake believes him, and together they try to reach the military before the whole town is gone.

Menzies was the production designer behind Gone with the Wind, and he brought that visual instinct here: the sets are slightly too smooth, the proportions just off enough to feel dreamlike.
