Synopsis
The Hitch-Hiker (1953) is a lean noir thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Two friends, Roy and Gilbert, are driving to Mexico for a fishing trip when they make the mistake of stopping for a stranger on a dark road. That stranger is Emmett Myers — a wanted killer who has already left a trail of bodies along the West Coast.
Myers takes control of the car and makes his terms plain: he needs the two men until he doesn't, and they have no illusions about what comes after. Edmond O'Brien and Frank Lovejoy play the desperate friends probing for any chance to turn the odds, while William Talman's Myers is an unnerving presence — one of his eyes never shuts, so neither man can risk a move while he's "sleeping."
Directed by Ida Lupino, who was the only woman helming genre pictures in early-1950s Hollywood, the film strips the thriller down to its bones: three men, a moving car, and a clock that keeps running. Stream The Hitch-Hiker (1953) online on iFILM.
