Synopsis
An Average Little Man (Un borghese piccolo piccolo, 1977) is a Mario Monicelli film from Italy — watch it online on iFILM. Alberto Sordi plays Giovanni Vivaldi, a mid-level ministry clerk coasting toward retirement with one ambition left: get his son Mario a secure government job before he goes.
Giovanni pulls strings, swallows humiliations, and arranges for Mario to join a Masonic lodge — all of it legal, all of it petty, all of it very Italian. On the day the plan is supposed to pay off, Mario is shot dead by a stray bullet during a bank robbery. His wife Amalia finds out from a TV news bulletin and suffers a stroke. What follows is not a grief story in any conventional sense. Monicelli watches Giovanni absorb the loss and then become something much harder to sympathize with.
Sordi had spent decades playing loveable comic fools, and Monicelli uses that goodwill against you here. The film doesn't explain or excuse what happens to the man — it just shows it. Stream An Average Little Man (1977) online on iFILM.
