Four middle-aged men — architects, journalists, the sort of people who should know better — keep abandoning their families and careers to pull increasingly elaborate pranks on strangers. Slapping unsuspecting passengers at train stations, chasing women through Tuscany, inventing catastrophes from thin air. The jokes get bigger and the laughter gets louder, even as one of the group is quietly running out of time.

The original director Pietro Germi died before production began; Monicelli stepped in and turned the project into something sharper than pure farce.
