Ten passengers wake to a cabin stripped of its crew and the rest of the travelers, with only their belongings left behind. One survivor, pilot Brian Engle, brings the jet down at Bangor, Maine. The ground gives them nothing back: sound won't carry, matches won't catch, time seems to have stalled out. The season tightens slowly as the group realizes they've slipped into a gnawed-away past — and something is already heading their way, a thing one of them names the langoliers. What those creatures are, and why they eat the world behind us, comes clear by degrees.
