Synopsis
Career Girls (1997) is a British drama from Mike Leigh that you can watch online on iFILM. Six years after university, Hannah and Annie meet again for a weekend in London. They once shared a grotty flat and every neurosis that came with it; now both have jobs and tailored coats, yet the old awkwardness hasn't gone anywhere.
The film rocks between two timelines. The composed, slightly estranged women of the present — and their younger selves in the early 1990s, jittery and broke, talking through their anxiety until dawn in cheap secondhand wool. Katrin Cartlidge and Lynda Steadman play the pair so that every old scar shows. A young Andy Serkis turns up in a supporting role, long before Gollum.
As ever, Leigh built the parts through months of rehearsal and improvisation rather than a finished script, which is why the dialogue feels overheard instead of written. It's a quiet picture about how growing up changes the surface but never quite switches off the old fears. One for anyone who loves British drama driven by character rather than plot.
