Synopsis
Four Days in September (1997) is Bruno Barreto's political thriller, available to watch online on iFILM. It reconstructs a true event from the fall of 1969, when young Brazilian revolutionaries seized the United States ambassador.
Journalist Fernando and his friend César go underground, unable to stomach the military dictatorship any longer. Their cell, MR-8, gambles everything on one move: hold the American diplomat and trade him for fifteen jailed comrades. Alan Arkin plays the ambassador, kept in a rented room by captors who aren't sure they could actually pull the trigger. Barreto refuses easy heroes, giving the hunters and the hunted equal weight.
The film competed for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and remains one of Brazil's most clear-eyed reckonings with its years of repression. It unfolds like a chamber drama, the tension living in conversation, fear and doubt rather than gunfire. If you want a thinking person's political thriller, this is the one.
