Synopsis
Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe (2016) is an Austrian historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Maria Schrader — later known for I'm Your Man — assembles Zweig's portrait from disconnected episodes: Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, New York, back to Brazil. He left Europe ahead of the war, but Europe never loosens its grip. Every ceremony held in his name, every letter from the continent pulls him back.
Josef Hader plays a man who had come to embody the idea of a humane, literate Europe — and now can't decide what that means in wartime: speak out, stay silent, or simply go on living quietly in a comfortable suburb with his new wife (Aenne Schwarz).
