Synopsis
Joyeux Noël (2005) is Christian Carion's war drama you can watch online on iFILM. It's the freezing winter of the First World War, and on Christmas Eve French, Scottish and German troops face each other across the same shell-torn ground. Then something almost impossible happens.
Men on both sides lower their rifles and step out into no man's land to swap cigarettes, share chocolate, sing together and bury their dead. Carion threads several stories at once: a Scottish chaplain, a French lieutenant, a German tenor named Sprink and his soprano lover, played by Diane Kruger. Daniel Brühl, Guillaume Canet and Dany Boon fill out the ensemble. None of it is invented. Truces really did flare up along the front that December of 1914, and the high command worked hard to bury the memory afterward.
