The fairy-tale framing is deliberate misdirection: the trains go to Auschwitz, and what surrounds this child is the full landscape of occupied Europe — neighbours who help, neighbours who report, and those who do both in the same afternoon.

Hazanavicius chooses animation because no other register holds both registers at once — the softness of a bedtime story and the weight of historical fact.
