Synopsis
The Most Precious of Cargoes (La Plus Précieuse des marchandises, 2024) is a French animated drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Michel Hazanavicius — who took home the Best Picture Oscar for The Artist — adapts Jean-Claude Grumberg's short fable, with voice performances by Grégory Gadebois and the late Jean-Louis Trintignant. Runtime: 81 minutes.
The story opens like a fairy tale. A poor woodcutter and his wife live in a vast forest crossed daily by trains. One winter morning, the wife pulls a baby girl from a snowdrift — thrown from a passing freight car. Her husband wants her gone. Then he doesn't. Then he'll do anything to keep her alive. The fairy-tale framing is deliberate misdirection: the trains go to Auschwitz, and what surrounds this child is the full landscape of occupied Europe — neighbours who help, neighbours who report, and those who do both in the same afternoon.
Hazanavicius chooses animation because no other register holds both registers at once — the softness of a bedtime story and the weight of historical fact. The result sits closer to Maus than to conventional Holocaust drama: an 81-minute film that earns its final image. Watch The Most Precious of Cargoes (2024) online on iFILM.
