Synopsis
The Swallows of Kabul (Les Hirondelles de Kaboul, 2019) is a French animated drama directed by Zabou Breitman and Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec — watch it online on iFILM. The summer of 1998 in Taliban-controlled Kabul: public executions in the stadium, women invisible under mandatory burqas, a city that used to have music and university classes now stripped down to fear. Into that setting come four lives on a collision course.
Zunaira and Mohsen are young and in love, still holding on to each other despite everything. Atiq is a prison guard worn down by years of locking up condemned women. One impulsive, irreversible act by Mohsen sets all four of them tumbling toward a shared catastrophe. The screenplay draws from Yasmina Khadra's novel; the voice cast includes Swann Arlaud, Zita Hanrot, Simon Abkarian and Hiam Abbass.
What makes this film unusual is its visual language — the animation is watercolour and translucent, fragile-looking against the brutality it depicts. That gap between image and subject is deliberate, and it hits harder than any realistic rendering would. This is animation for adults who want serious cinema, not spectacle.
