Synopsis
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) is a Hollywood noir directed by Tay Garnett, adapted from James M. Cain's 1934 novel — watch it online on iFILM, starring John Garfield and Lana Turner.
Drifter Frank stops at a roadside diner in California and meets Cora, the much-younger wife of the Greek proprietor. Turner's entrance — all white shorts and platinum hair — makes clear where things are headed. Frank stays on as help; Cora makes clear she wants out but not into poverty. The only money is her husband's. So the husband has to go. Their first attempt fails. They try again.
The film made it through the Production Code's tightest years and still crackles with the pull between the two leads. The chemistry carries what the censors forced the script to leave implicit, and Garnett keeps the pace tight enough that the inevitability feels like fate rather than formula.
