Synopsis
Nightmare Alley (1947) is Edmund Goulding's noir thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Tyrone Power plays Stan Carlisle, a carny mentalist who learns to read people well enough to make a very good living — and eventually a very bad end. Helen Walker and Coleen Gray round out the central cast.
Carlisle starts with fairground cold-reading tricks, graduates to a polished stage act built on coded signals with a partner, then graduates again to something far more dangerous: convincing wealthy, grieving clients that he can channel their dead. One of those clients is Ezra Grindle, an aging millionaire who wants to speak with his late daughter. Carlisle is certain he's in control of the situation. He isn't.
Goulding shot this with an unflinching bleakness that was unusual for a studio picture of its era — no redemption, no soft landing. Guillermo del Toro remade it in 2021, but the original is leaner and considerably darker. For anyone drawn to classic noir about men who outsmart themselves, this is the real thing.
