Synopsis
The Flight of Dragons (1982) is a hand-drawn Rankin/Bass fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. Logic and science are pushing magic out of the world, so the green wizard Carolinus hatches a plan to seal all sorcery inside one realm where it can survive forever.
His brother stands in the way. Ommadon, the red wizard, rules through fear and wants the old powers for himself. To stop him, Carolinus recruits Peter Dickinson, a scholar who grasps both spells and equations, and sends him on a quest with a small band of companions. Dragons carry the heroes forward, and Peter finds himself trapped inside a dragon's body along the road. James Earl Jones voices Ommadon, John Ritter plays Peter, and Don McLean wrote and sang the theme.
The film argues that reason without wonder leaves the world poorer, and it never talks down to kids while doing so. If you grew up on the darker animation of the early eighties, this one belongs on your list. Stream The Flight of Dragons (1982) online on iFILM.
