Synopsis
Still of the Night (1982) is a slow-burn psychological thriller you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Robert Benton. Manhattan psychoanalyst Sam Rice, played by Roy Scheider, learns that one of his patients has been stabbed to death. First the police come asking questions. Then the dead man's mistress shows up at his door.
Rice is drawn to her almost instantly, even though the detective on the case pegs her as his prime suspect. There's a catch he can't shake: on the couch, his late patient once described a woman who had killed before and might do it again. Meryl Streep plays Brooke as a closed book — victim or predator, you genuinely can't tell. The deeper Rice digs on his own, the clearer it becomes that he's being hunted too.
Benton made this straight after Kramer vs. Kramer and leans openly into Hitchcock — dreams, smudged clues, desire tangled up with fear. Jessica Tandy is a fine fit as the hero's psychiatrist mother. There are no cheap jolts here; it's for viewers who like tension that gathers quietly and rides on two performers. Stream Still of the Night (1982) online on iFILM.
