Synopsis
The Ipcress File (1965) is a British spy thriller directed by Sidney J. Furie — watch it online on iFILM. Michael Caine plays Harry Palmer, a sardonic army sergeant with a disciplinary file long enough to guarantee he has no choice but to work for British intelligence.
Palmer is the anti-Bond. He wears glasses, cooks his own breakfast, talks back to his handlers, and makes no pretense of ideology. His assignment: trace a leak inside the security service, somewhere between a missing scientist and a document codenamed Ipcress. The trail runs through kidnapping, psychological torture and a layer of betrayal no one in the office is above suspicion for. Director Furie filled the frame with low angles, cramped rooms and an unglamorous London — a deliberate counter-programme to the glossy espionage cinema of the same moment.
Producer Harry Saltzman had just co-launched James Bond; here he backed the exact opposite idea. The film picked up a BAFTA for Best British Film and launched a Palmer franchise that ran through two sequels. Stream The Ipcress File (1965) online on iFILM.
