Synopsis

It's the early 1970s. British intelligence suspects a Soviet mole has burrowed into the top of the Circus, and anyone who said so out loud was quietly pushed out. Smiley, himself forced into retirement, is brought back off the books to find the traitor — one of four longtime colleagues is feeding Moscow. The hunt unfolds with almost no gunfire: old files, overheard talk, faces around a conference table. The cast is stacked: Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Hurt.
It's adapted from the novel by John le Carré, who served in British intelligence and wrote espionage as dreary bureaucracy with human casualties. The role of Smiley earned Oldman his first Oscar nomination. This is the kind of thriller where the tension comes from glances and silences, not chases.
