Synopsis
No Bears (خرس نیست, 2022) is an Iranian drama by Jafar Panahi that you can watch online on iFILM. The director casts himself: banned from leaving the country, he holes up in a remote village near the Turkish border and tries to direct his crew over a patchy video link.
On the far side of that border, his team films a couple chasing forged passports for a new life in Europe. In the village itself, Panahi happens to snap a single photograph, and the rumor about it spirals into a mess of an arranged engagement, an old local custom, and deep suspicion of the outsider with a camera. Two stories about people boxed in by superstition, gossip, and the state slowly fold into one.
Panahi shot this while effectively under house arrest, which is why the texture feels so dry, almost documentary, with a streak of bitter humor underneath. It took the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Best for viewers who like patient arthouse cinema where the line between staged and real keeps dissolving.
