Synopsis
Piece by Piece (2024) is a documentary about Pharrell Williams told entirely in LEGO animation, and you can watch it online on iFILM. No live talking heads in the usual sense — every face on screen is a plastic minifig.
It tracks the producer from Virginia Beach to the top of the charts: The Neptunes with Chad Hugo, beats for Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z and Britney, the band N.E.R.D., and the inescapable smash "Happy." Gwen Stefani, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar and Snoop sit for interviews too, each rebuilt as a brick version of themselves.
Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville, who made 20 Feet from Stardom, is behind the camera. The LEGO conceit sounds like a gimmick, yet it's exactly what lets the film show how Pharrell hears color and assembles a track one piece at a time. It's an odd, joyful spin on the music doc — built for hip-hop heads and anyone raised on the bricks. Stream Piece by Piece online on iFILM.
