Phantom

Phantom (2013) is a Cold War submarine thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Writer-director Todd Robinson drew on declassified accounts of Soviet naval incidents to build the story of a veteran captain — played by Ed Harris — handed one final classified mission before retirement. He is not told everything. That omission is the whole problem.

A KGB team boards the vessel carrying a device codenamed Phantom, capable of mimicking the acoustic signature of any submarine in the water. David Duchovny plays their leader with a smooth authority that never quite settles into trustworthy. As the mission's true objective becomes clear, Harris's captain has to decide whether the uniform still means what he thought it meant. Lance Henriksen and William Fichtner round out a cast that makes the confined quarters feel genuinely tense.

The production budget is modest, and the film doesn't pretend otherwise. What it has is Harris, and that turns out to be enough — his performance carries the weight of a man who has already given too much and is being asked for more.
