DG is a small-town waitress who always felt out of place — and turns out she was right to. Strange dreams, an ambush on her family, and a tornado later, she lands in the Outer Zone, a magical realm locked under the rule of the sorceress Azkadellia. Her travel companions are Glitch, whose brain was partly scooped out; Raw, an empathic creature who barely speaks; and Cain, an ex-lawman who spent years imprisoned inside a metal suit.

This is not a straightforward Oz retelling. Nick Willing's version uses Frank Baum's world as raw material and rebuilds it as a dark, political fantasy with an identity mystery at its core.
