Synopsis
Mermaid Down (2019) is an American dark fantasy horror directed by Jeffrey Grellman — watch it online on iFILM. A fishing crew hauls a living mermaid out of the Pacific Ocean. Her tail gets cut off. Then she gets locked inside a psychiatric institution where being unable to speak the right language is just more evidence of mental illness.
No one inside believes her. There is no procedure for what she is. The women around her are themselves dismissed, medicated, contained — so whatever alliance she manages to build is fragile and unofficial. Survival means working around a system designed to keep everyone in it powerless.
Grellman works the horror from an angle that lingers: the cruelty isn't supernatural, it's bureaucratic. The creature mythology is secondary to the trap the institution itself represents. For a low-budget genre film it carries a sharper point than most. Stream Mermaid Down (2019) online on iFILM.
