Tyson's Run

Tyson's Run (2022) is Kim Bass's family drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. Fifteen-year-old Tyson, who is autistic, walks into a mainstream school for the first time, and the steady little world he knows tilts overnight.

While helping his dad clean up after the football team, Tyson falls in with Aklilu, a champion marathon runner. Out of that friendship grows an improbable goal: to run a full marathon. Partly for himself, partly to finally earn the approval of a father — a former athlete — who has never quite learned to meet his son halfway. Amy Smart plays the mother holding the household together, Rory Cochrane the father, and Barkhad Abdi the mentor who sees a runner where others see a diagnosis.

The film is quiet and structurally familiar; you can guess where the finish line is well before Tyson reaches it. What carries it is the sincerity of the tone and Major Dodson's lead performance, which never plays for pity. It's a story about the first step being the hardest, and stubbornness doing the rest.
