Synopsis
Simon & the Oaks (2011) is a Swedish historical drama directed by Lisa Ohlin that you can watch online on iFILM. The story is set in wartime Gothenburg — Sweden staying neutral while a continent burns — and begins when young Simon Larsson (Bill Skarsgård) discovers that the quiet working-class couple who raised him are not his biological parents.
His father turns out to be Isidor, a Jewish intellectual (Jan Josef Liefers) who fled Germany before the war sealed shut. As the two families draw together over books, music, and shared meals, Simon carries the question of who he really is across two decades — from the wartime 1940s into the reconstruction years of the 1950s. Based on a beloved novel by Marianne Fredriksson.
Quiet and unhurried in the way Scandinavian cinema often earns. The film doesn't dramatize history loudly — it shows how history settles into ordinary people and doesn't leave. Stream Simon & the Oaks (2011) online on iFILM.
