Synopsis
Shame (Skammen, 1968) is an Ingmar Bergman war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann play Jan and Eva Rosenberg, former musicians who have retreated to a Baltic island to sit out a war that seems distant. For a while, the island holds.
Then it doesn't. Soldiers arrive, loyalties are tested, and survival begins to cost more than either of them expected. Bergman shoots the violence obliquely — there are no front lines here, no heroics — because his subject is what sustained fear and moral compromise do to a marriage. Jan and Eva respond to pressure in opposite ways, and the growing distance between them is the film's real catastrophe.
Cinematographer Sven Nykvist shot it in stark black and white, and the visual austerity suits a film that strips everything down to the question of what is left of a person after they have chosen to endure at any cost. Stream Shame (1968) online on iFILM.
