The Spiral Staircase

The Spiral Staircase (1946) is a classic noir thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Director Robert Siodmak sets the film in a small New England town in 1916, where a serial killer is targeting young women with physical disabilities — and Helen, a mute servant in an old mansion, is exactly who he has in mind next.

Dorothy McGuire delivers the entire performance without a word of dialogue: just eyes, breath, and mounting dread as a storm cuts off the house and she realizes she is not alone. Ethel Barrymore was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as the ailing matriarch Mrs. Warren — her two sons present very different threats. Siodmak builds the tension through shadow, ticking clocks, and a point-of-view shot through a keyhole that became one of the most-copied images in the genre.
