"The Suspect" (1945) is a noir thriller from director Robert Siodmak you can watch online on iFILM. Charles Laughton plays Philip Marshall, a gentle London shopkeeper grinding through a marriage that has turned punishing. Ella Raines is the young stenographer he befriends.

London, 1902. When Philip's wife discovers the friendship and threatens a public scandal, a quiet man makes a choice he cannot undo. Her death is ruled accidental. It might have stayed that way — except a cold-eyed blackmailer and a methodical detective arrive almost simultaneously, each knowing more than Philip would like.

Siodmak had already made "Phantom Lady" (1944) by this point and was building one of the decade's strongest noir runs. He makes no attempt to hide Philip's guilt here — the whole film rests on Laughton playing a man who did something terrible and remains, somehow, worth caring about.
