Synopsis
"Cry of the City" (1948) is a New York noir directed by Robert Siodmak, available to watch online on iFILM. Cop-killer Martin Rome (Richard Conte) is bleeding out in a prison hospital ward and will not give up a thing — not a confession, not a name, not his girlfriend Teena.
Police Lt. Candella (Victor Mature) grew up on the same block as Martin, and the assignment to bring him in sits badly. When Martin breaks out to keep the investigation away from Teena, Candella follows him across the boroughs — and the distance between law and old loyalty keeps shrinking. Hope Emerson's turn as a criminal masseuse adds a genuinely unsettling dimension to the second act.
Siodmak, a German émigré who had fled Europe in the 1930s, shot much of the film on actual New York locations — tight tenement hallways, rain-slicked corners, real neighbourhood bars. The city is not a backdrop here; it is the pressure that shapes everyone in it. Stream "Cry of the City" online on iFILM.
