Synopsis
Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2000) is a quiet ensemble drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Rodrigo García threads several short stories about well-off women in Los Angeles whose composed surface hides something much heavier.
Dr. Elaine Keener cares for her ailing mother and turns to a tarot reader for some kind of answer. A bank manager faces an unplanned pregnancy. Two sisters chase very different kinds of love, and a housewife steps back into dating after years away. The plots barely touch; what binds them is loneliness and the small ways people reach past it.
Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, Cameron Diaz, Calista Flockhart, Kathy Baker and Valeria Golino each carry a vignette, and the cast is the whole point. García — son of novelist Gabriel García Márquez — would later create In Treatment; here he first lays out his trademark for unhurried female portraits. Best for viewers who prefer talky, performance-driven drama over plot. Stream Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her online on iFILM.
