Synopsis
The Commander (Comandante, 2023) is an Italian war film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Edoardo De Angelis, with Pierfrancesco Favino as Salvatore Todaro — the real commander of the Royal Italian Navy submarine Cappellini during the early months of the Second World War.
One October night in 1940, the Cappellini surfaces after sinking an armed merchant vessel running dark through the Atlantic. Twenty-six Belgian sailors end up in the water. Todaro orders them pulled aboard, then keeps his submarine on the surface for three days — visible to enemy aircraft and patrols — until he can put the survivors ashore at a safe port. No regulation required it. No tactical advantage came from it. He simply did it.
De Angelis reconstructs the episode with rigorous physical detail: the cramped iron hull, the constant threat overhead, the weight of command. Favino plays Todaro without ceremony — precise, stubborn, uncomfortably principled.
