Battlefield (Campo di battaglia, 2024) is Gianni Amelio's war drama, now available to watch online on iFILM. In the final year of World War I, a military hospital in northern Italy fills daily with men torn apart at the front.

Two doctors, friends since their university days, work at cross purposes. Stefano hunts down soldiers who wound themselves to escape the trenches and hauls the malingerers before a military court. Giulio, sickened by the sight of blood, quietly does the opposite — helping them stay unfit for service. Between them stands Anna, a strong-willed nurse, and their argument over duty stops being merely medical.

Then the 1918 Spanish flu arrives, killing faster than any weapon and hollowing out the question — heal a man only to send him back to die? Alessandro Borghi plays Stefano cold and contained; there are no battle scenes at all, the whole war fits inside a ward. It's a quiet, unsparing film about the cost of mercy.
