Beyond Outrage

Beyond Outrage (アウトレイジ ビヨンド, 2012) is Takeshi Kitano's yakuza sequel — watch it online on iFILM. Kitano directs and stars again as Otomo, the mob boss everyone had written off as dead, returning from prison into a landscape that has grown considerably more complicated in his absence.

The Sanno family has expanded far beyond street crime into politics and legitimate business. A sharp detective named Kataoka decides to play the Sanno against their rivals, the Hanabishi, engineering a war he hopes will let the state step back and collect the pieces afterward. Otomo is his leverage. What nobody accounts for is how little leverage means in a world where every alliance has an expiry date of about fifteen minutes.

Kitano packs the 112-minute runtime with betrayals that come too fast to track, which is precisely the point — the film argues that organized crime runs entirely on the logic of the double-cross, no deeper structure underneath.
