Boiling Point

Watch Boiling Point (3-4x October, 1990) online on iFILM — a Japanese crime drama-comedy and Takeshi Kitano's second feature as director. It has the same signature he was already developing: bursts of sudden violence between stretches of near-silence, and a deadpan sense of humour that keeps you off-balance.

Masaki pumps gas and plays baseball. He picks a fight with the wrong yakuza, which is a bad idea under any circumstances, and goes to Okinawa to get a gun before things get worse. On the island he crosses paths with Uehara — a hardened gangster in serious debt to the same criminal organisation, planning something drastic. The two storylines converge without neatness or resolution.

This is not a thriller that rewards patience with answers. Kitano is interested in the drift — how ordinary people make small, stupid choices that compound into catastrophe. Unhurried, occasionally absurd, and bleak without being melodramatic. A good entry point into his early work. Stream Boiling Point (1990) on iFILM.
