Synopsis
Watch Forbidden Games (Jeux interdits, 1952) online on iFILM — René Clément's French war drama that claimed an Honorary Oscar for Best Foreign Film and the Golden Lion at Venice. June 1940: a Luftwaffe strafing run scatters a column of Parisian refugees on a country road, and five-year-old Paulette is left with nothing — not even her dog.
A farm boy named Michel finds her and brings her home. The two children bond with the directness only children manage, and together they build a private cemetery for dead animals, raiding every cross they can find to mark the graves. It is their quiet act of order against a world that has lost all of it. Clément keeps the camera almost entirely at child height, which is why the film hits harder than most combat pictures. Brigitte Fossey was four when they shot it, Georges Poujouly was eleven. That rawness is impossible to fake, and it still shows. Stream Forbidden Games (1952) on iFILM.
