Synopsis
The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice (お茶漬けの味, 1952) is a Yasujiro Ozu drama you can watch online on iFILM. Taeko grew up in Tokyo high society and resents the husband her family arranged for her: to her, Mokichi is a dull country type — plain food, cheap cigarettes, no flair. And he simply puts up with it.
She slips away from married routine for spa trips and ballgames with her girlfriends, spinning small lies just to avoid the house. In a parallel thread her young niece Setsuko flatly refuses the matchmaking meetings, unwilling to walk into someone else's unhappy marriage. Ozu builds the film from tiny things — teacups, passing trains, awkward silences at the table — and from them a quiet portrait emerges of two people who've gone years without really hearing each other.
The turn comes in the most ordinary way: over a late bowl of rice and green tea, the couple grasps something plain and essential about sharing a life. It's shot in Ozu's signature manner — low camera, still frames, nothing forced. It suits anyone who loves slow Japanese cinema and family drama free of melodrama.
