Season 1
Who would have thought retirement could be so chaotic?
Synopsis
One Foot in the Grave (1990), Season 1 is the BBC sitcom you can watch online on iFILM — six episodes that introduce Victor Meldrew, freshly made redundant at sixty and replaced at work by a talking machine.
The whole season runs on one idea: forced retirement gives a restless man far too much time, and everything he touches goes wrong. A neighbour's loud party. A baffling rash. An atheist's funeral. He gets mugged while photographing badgers, finds an insult sprayed across his house, and responds by calling a crime-prevention meeting. Later episodes hand him a babysitting ordeal, a new hobby that turns out to be painting nudes — not quite what his wife Margaret had hoped for — and a hard-earned holiday that opens with food poisoning. Domestic comedy laced with black humour and a streak of the surreal.
Written by David Renwick, with Richard Wilson as Victor and Annette Crosbie as Margaret, this first run sets the show's tone: a grumbling man at war with a world he keeps provoking. Stream One Foot in the Grave Season 1 online on iFILM.
