Synopsis

Charité (2017), Season 1 — six episodes of German historical drama to watch online on iFILM. Berlin, 1888: the hallways of Germany's most famous hospital double as a laboratory for modern medicine, with Robert Koch, Rudolf Virchow, and Emil von Behring all working under one roof.

Ida arrives there broke and in debt — the hospital saved her life, and now she repays it scrubbing wards. From that vantage point she watches Koch inject tuberculin into his own arm, Behring push toward a diphtheria cure that keeps sliding away, and Virchow try to hold liberal ground as nationalism tightens around Berlin. Her romance with a young doctor is the season's emotional thread; what Ida actually wants is a coat and stethoscope of her own.

The ARD production earns its reputation by refusing to flatten the history: the breakthroughs here are slow, contested, and full of dead ends. Stream Charité Season 1 all episodes on iFILM.
