Physicians and nurses are crossing into West Berlin by the hundreds while the border is still open, leaving Charité dangerously short-staffed. Then one August night a provisional wall splits the city in two, and the hospital lands right on the dividing line. The first casualties at the Wall arrive at the ward. Ella is terrified that someone close to her is among them. Between a newborn who needs an emergency transfusion and a neonatal sepsis case that exposes a rift between departments, the staff must also decide: stay in the East, or disappear into the West?

East Berlin in the summer of 1961: Dr. Ella Wendt is transferred from Senftenberg to the Charité to ensure health care. Doctors and nursing staff leave the GDR en masse for West Berlin.
