Synopsis
The Big Knife (1955) is Robert Aldrich's bruising drama about the dark heart of Hollywood, ready to watch online on iFILM. Screen star Charlie Castle refuses to re-sign a seven-year studio contract, and that one act of defiance sets the slow squeeze in motion.
Castle is sick of starring in glossy junk and wants out for a cleaner life. His estranged wife backs the break; his agent begs him to cave; and producer Stanley Hoff, a man used to owning people, reaches for blackmail and buried scandal to keep his star on the leash. Almost the entire story unfolds inside one lavish living room, and that closed space tightens like a fist — fame traded away for self-respect, piece by piece. Jack Palance plays the cornered actor, Rod Steiger the bullying mogul, with Ida Lupino and Shelley Winters circling the wreckage.
Adapted from Clifford Odets' acid stage play, the film is a furious takedown of the dream factory written by someone it chewed up. Talky, claustrophobic, mean — built for viewers who love classic noir and stories about the cost of selling out. Stream The Big Knife (1955) online on iFILM.
