Synopsis
Laurence Anyways (2012) is a Canadian-French drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Xavier Dolan at age 23, starring Melvil Poupaud and Suzanne Clément. Running time: 168 minutes.
Laurence is a literature teacher in Montreal who tells his girlfriend Fred that he needs to live as a woman. Fred loves him. That love does not make things easier. Dolan spans a decade — late '80s through the '90s — dressing the film in bold New Wave colours while the relationship fractures, reassembles, and fractures again. Poupaud carries the transformation with a quiet physicality, and Clément's Fred is the emotional centre: a woman torn between who she loves and what that love costs her.
The film claimed the FIPRESCI Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, and Clément took the Genie Award for Best Actress. Stream Laurence Anyways online on iFILM.
