One Fine Morning

One Fine Morning (Un beau matin, 2022) is Mia Hansen-Løve's quiet French drama, available to watch online — a film where grief and desire share the same ordinary week. Sandra, a Paris translator raising her daughter alone, visits her father every few days as a neurodegenerative illness slowly empties him out.

Léa Seydoux carries it almost without raising her voice. Her father, a former philosophy teacher, still recognizes the books on his shelves but no longer the people who gave them to him; the family hunts for a care home, makes the phone calls, packs up the library of a man disappearing inside it. Into that exhaustion walks Clément, an old friend played by Melvil Poupaud — married, unavailable, and impossible to resist. Their affair flickers on and off across the seasons.

Hansen-Løve refuses melodrama. One thread is a fading mind, the other a reawakened body, and she lets them run side by side without forcing a lesson. The film took the Directors' Fortnight prize at Cannes and lives almost entirely on Seydoux's face in close-up. It's for viewers who like their French cinema patient and grown-up.
