Synopsis

The Court Jester (1955) is a Paramount musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, built almost entirely around one question: how much chaos can Danny Kaye generate per minute? His Hubert Hawkins — bumbling carnival entertainer turned reluctant spy — has to infiltrate a tyrant's castle by pretending to be the realm's most feared jester.

The supporting cast keeps up: Glynis Johns as the sharp-edged rebel fighter, Angela Lansbury as the put-upon princess, and Basil Rathbone swinging a rapier with the kind of precision that makes the comedy around him funnier by contrast. At the centre of it all sits the poison/pellet/pestle tongue-twister, a bit of wordplay so intricate it still gets quoted seven decades later. Directed by Norman Panama and Melvin Frank and shot in rich Technicolor, this plays bigger than most straight-faced adventure films of the era.

What makes it hold up is that the jokes are earned, not telegraphed. Kaye does stunts, sings, does hypnosis bits, and never stops moving. Stream The Court Jester online on iFILM — a tight, genuinely funny piece of Hollywood craftsmanship from 1955.
